The Secret Squirrel series is a year-long sewing journey created by An from Straight-grain and Suz from sewpony. Read all about it here and see where he's already visited here. Secret Squirrel contacted me via Tasha from I Seam Stressed and gave me these five acorns of inspiration....
I'm proud to say I incorporated all five acorns - and I'm kind of in love with the result...
The leafy green bodice is self drafted, fully lined, and has my first invisible zipper! Which wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. Actually, it's the first time I've ever put a zipper in a clothing garment. I almost chickened out but I couldn't find any leaf shaped buttons I liked and then decided it would be too many "cute" buttons anyway and that I should just stop being a scaredy sewer and DO IT already. Yeah for pep-talks in the middle of the fabric store!
And last but certainly not least - Zooey Deschenel should be obvious (and if not a quick google images search on her name will clue you in). Hello silhouette of my dreams!
I was hesitant to invite the Secret Squirrel for a visit but I'm so glad I did!! I put more time and effort into this than any other garment I've made and it turned out EXACTLY as I imagined. Thanks to the squirrel for bringing this fabulous inspiration! And on that note...here are the next five inspirational acorns:
If you would like to join Secret Squirrel on his journey, leave a comment on this post and check your inbox in a week’s time… you may be the chosen one to pass on the baton of creativity that is SECRET SQUIRREL!!!
Prizes are being organised and are going to be super cool!! But please do not blog about or upload photos for November's Secret Squirrel until November 2nd. Secret Squirrel's next stop will be revealed on November 1!
And if this is your first time visiting - welcome! I hope you'll stick around and explore a bit. I'm happy you're here!
Absolutely adorable, this dress!
ReplyDeleteI've been actually loving all your creations. Congratulations!
Thank you so much - that's an extra big compliment coming from you! I've been obsessing about the red dress you posted ALL morning. One more thing to add to my to-sew list. ha!
DeleteGorgeous Amy!!! I love it! I was wondering how the shark would be incorporated without being in your face..So sweetly done. I might be a bit slow, but I did a google image search of Zooey, and I am a bit unsure. Will you enlighten me? thanks so much for hosting. I love your acorns too. Princess bride was one of my favourite movies and I can't wait to show my girls when they are old enough not to be scared of it!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Suz! Sorry the Zooey thing wasn't more clear -- she wears this shape a lot. Fitted bodice, poofy skirt. I updated my post with a link. I'm so glad you like the acorns! Coming up with them was the hardest part of the whole challenge!
DeleteThe bias tape waves and the little shark fin are soooo perfect - well done Amy!!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be the next host :)
Thank you, Renee! The shark acorn made me most nervous but ended up being the details I love the most about the dress! Maybe b/c I had to work so hard for it...ha!
DeleteLove the dress :) The waves are my fav, too :) Going to check out your other creations :) Oh, and of course I would like to host SS :) I have a feeling it wants to learn a few Russian words!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenya! The waves took FOREVER but definitely make the skirt, huh?
DeleteThat is pure awesomeness. The shark in the bias wave! What a fab idea! I would love to be the next host. A stop to Germany should be a must for secret squirrel....
ReplyDeleteHe's fab as long as he doesn't bite, ha!. Thanks Annika!
DeleteOh wow this is stunning!! You did an amazing job incorporating all of the little bits! Love love it! That sneaky shark too! :)
ReplyDeleteSuper sneaky. It took me more than a dozen shots to get that picture. Between getting caught in the gathers and being worn by a toddler...I worked for that one. ha!
DeleteThe whole thing is darling, but I love the little shark fin!
ReplyDeleteI almost didn't add him but the consensus seems to be that he's a winner. So glad I did! Thanks for your comment!!
DeleteThis is lovely. I love how you interpreted everything and that shark detail! Brilliant! What fun to host secret squirrel :) I would be honored to host such a clever little guy.
ReplyDeleteMy husband doesn't often offer an opinion on my sewing but he did say "yes" to the shark fin when I was uncertain. I'm going to keep the word "brilliant" to myself, though, when I tell him he chose right. ha! We don't want his sewing decision success to go to his head, do we?
DeleteThat shark fin is fabulously awesome!
ReplyDeleteI think I might have to start hiding fins on everything I make. ha!
DeleteLooove your interpretation of the five acorns!!! And I would do a very big happy dance if I was chosen for the next secret squirrel!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome sauce! I would so love to have the squirrel visit me - I love your acorns!!! "As you wish!"
ReplyDelete"Wuv...twue wuv..."
DeleteThe dress is gorgeous! Great job! I would love the squirrel to pay me a visit!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh I love the waves! And the stars : ). I'd love to join the secret squirrel journey : ). My blog is kimmiesewcrazy.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful, unusual outfit. The colors look great together. And way too cute with the shark fin. Also love the buttons you added. Congrats of conquering the zipper fear!
ReplyDeleteThank you! The zipper was one of those things that, once tried, I couldn't believe it took me so long. Unlike buttonholes that still give me palpitations...but still I can't stop loving them!
DeleteI love the way you got all those acorns to go together so well! And would love to have the secret squirrel visit friendsStitchedTogether.wordpress.com :)
ReplyDelete-Amy
Love that dress! I love Zooey Deschanel as well (slightly biased since I have a Zoe). I would love to have the secret squirrel come visit me! linzigenavieve.blogspot.com :D
ReplyDeleteI might have giggled in joy a little when I saw Zooey was an acorn. ha!
DeleteFantastic, I especially love the little shark detail !
ReplyDeleteHe's a big hit!
Deletethis is awesome Ame! I also love the shark fin.
ReplyDeletei actually took a picture last week of something Zoey was wearing on New Girl to show you.
Send it over!
DeleteMy favorite part is the bottom layer...love the waves & the tiny shark! I had no idea who Zooey Deschanel is - I must be out of it too.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm too big a fan - ha! On the level of "how could people NOT know?" Sorry for being so presumptuous!! Hope the google link helped...
DeleteI adore the waves and the sneaky shark! I can totally see my little girl in such a skirt!
ReplyDeleteLove the little prince collar too! Amazing how 'just' that colour and some stars immediately say 'Little Prince'.
Yeah! I'm so glad that's what you "hear" when you see the collar, too!
DeleteHaha, I was scratching my head as to how to incorporate the shark... super creative! :-)
ReplyDeleteSecret Squirrel would love to visit Canada at this time of the year... there's lots of lovely leaves all over the ground, perfect for the little guy to play with!

ReplyDeleteI love this series so much because it is so much fun to see how the acorns are interpreted! You did a great job on all of them, but I think the hidden shark is my favorite!
