D is for Denim and Dots

This is a post about more.  More Lovely Ritas.  More Sewing all 26.  And more dots.  Always more dots.  Never enough dots!!!

These skinnies were also made from an old pair of my pants...but this pair came from the to-be-upcycled dresser (yes, that's right, dresser - not box, not bin, not drawer - dresser.  My secret is out.  I'm feeling appropriate levels of shame.) as opposed to directly from my closet like they did last time.

Although there are a lot of jeans with dots on them out there lately, these were actually just plain denim (I left the waistband and  pockets plain).

I watered down some paint, marked some evenly spaced lines in chalk, and got to dipping.  I originally tried the eraser of a pencil on a test piece but the dots were bigger than I liked.  In the end the tip of a paint brush handle turned out to be just the right size.

Before these pictures they were painted, ironed (to set the paint), and washed once.  Some of the dots toward the waistband must not have gotten enough heat, though, because they faded too much.  I went back and re-painted as necessary.  They might be a little brighter now, but once I hit them with the heat (but better!) and wash them again they should fade to the same appearance as the rest (fingers crossed!).

I'm really happy with the finished product.  They remind me of the Nani Iro fabric I used here.  Plus if I had wanted perfect dots I would have bought pre-dotted fabric, right?  Right!

I also have to say, although I would prefer she not be holding a cell phone in so many of the model shots I take of her...I do have to show some gratitude as there would likely BE no shots without it.  Daniel Tiger FTW!  Thank you, PBS kids.  From Amos El & Lisi Loo - thank you.

Oh -- and linking up to No Big Dill's Sew All 26 - D is for Denim and Dots...and Daniel Tiger!

  2. Love the spotted Denim ... I can't tell you how many pairs of jeans I have that could be up-cycled for my daughters - it's rather embarrassing too!

  3. I love these! I would have never thought to do that! So clever and so cute...I might have to paint dots on some of my own jeans!

    1. Just a warning...it got really boring really fast on these little bitty jeans. Absurd amounts of patience needed for bigger ones. ha! Thanks!
